We know that Mulberry is reinventing and innovating for the past years, but we didn’t expect that they would redesign the iconic Mulberry Bayswater Bag.
For those that forgot about this beautiful piece, here’s brief intro refresh your memory. Released in 2003, the Bayswater bag was one of Mulberry’s first icons. The name is taken from an upmarket district in London. The design is inspired by traditional English doctor’s bag and it’s entirely crafted in the UK.
So what have been changed?
To answer this question, it’s best if we take a look at the original Mulberry Bayswater Bag.
First of all, the most obvious sign of difference is the shape. You see, the original Bayswater Bag has a curvy shape and the New Bayswater Bag is more like ‘squared’. Furthermore, Mulberry has given the New Bayswater Bag an extended wing – such a design is quite popular nowadays in the fashion world. But because Celine started the trend (Luggage and Phantom Bag), it keeps reminding me of that brand.
But just to want you know – the extended wing can be pushed in and out.
Mulberry has kept most of the fundamental elements of the original Bayswater, like signature the postman lock and other details like the front flap. But we’re missing one important thing: where is the chic luggage tag?
So they have left out the luggage tag on the New Bayswater. What’s more? The postman lock is crafted smaller and the design has been changed. In the original Bayswater Bag, the Mulberry tree is crafted on the postman lock. On the new Bayswater, they have removed the Mulberry tree and added the brand’s name. Which is also nice by the way.
Let’s look at the inside, but not much has been changed. The original Bayswater Bag features one main compartment, one internal zip pocket and two internal slip pockets. And this is the same with the New Bayswater Bag.
However, in the Original Bayswater Bag, we notice a Mulberry logo with a Mulberry tree badge. Now where is that on the New Bayswater?
Sizes and price comparison:
Mulberry New Bayswater Bag

Original Mulberry Bayswater Bag

Mulberry New Small Bayswater Bag

Original Mulberry Small Bayswater Bag
Size: 16 x 26 x 14 (H x W x D) in cm

So the prices are the same, but the sizes are so different. When we look at the medium sizes, the New Bayswater wins – it’s bigger in height as well as width. But when we look at the Small Bayswater, we can see that the newest version wins again. In fact, it’s much bigger, especially when you expand the wings.

I prefer the old style. Especially worn.
The new style is already ordinary, not much originality for this bag.
I think the new shape is much better. I debated between the new and old. I wish they would have kept the mulberry tree on the front and kept the brass supports on the bottom though. Otherwise, it’s perfect.
